New job

I informed my staff yesterday that I’m leaving IT on Jan. 1 to work full-time on New Media for Black Press, our parent company. There are a lot of unknowns about the new gig and it’s all still coming together, but it will certainly be exciting. I’m very anxious to get started.

Intel iMac boot disk screen

Intel iMac option-boot

Got our first Intel iMac today for testing. I fixed it up the way we like it and imaged the drive to a FireWire disk. When I option-booted to get to the startup disk selection screen (usually in OpenFirmware), I was greeted with this very slick new selection UI. It’s fully keyboard-navigable. Booting from FireWire is a bit slower than booting from the internal drive (see this movie for the FireWire boot), which happens quickly – damned fast, actually.

My initial reaction to Photoshop speed is: faster than my PowerBook. Photoshop CS2 booted twice as fast on the iMac (1.83GHz Core Duo, 2GB RAM) as on the PowerBook (1GHz G4, 2GB RAM). Working with a 35MB .psd file (levels, unsharp mask, etc.) seemed faster than I’m used to on the PowerBook. No complaints so far.

I’m taking this machine to the San Juans tomorrow for field testing by one of our production artists for a few weeks. If all goes well, we’ll be buying a few of these a month for the next year.

SF travel help wanted

We’re heading to San Francisco next week for MacWorld Expo and Julie is looking for some family-friendly entertainment while we’re there. I’ll be spending my days at the expo so she and Emi will need things to keep them busy. Ideas? Share them in the comments.

Going to MacWorld?

Is anyone planning to be at MacWorld in January? Julie and I are heading down for the week (thanks, boss!). If you’re going to be in San Francisco (or you live there, ahem, Sara) between January 8 and 13, let me know, we’d love to get together.

Washington State newspapers move to Knight Ridder

Big news today in news. This positions Knight Ridder to control most of Washington State’s daily newspapers once they complete their eventual takeover of the Seattle Times and it’s smaller dailies. I certainly wouldn’t want to be publisher of The News Tribune or the King County Journal right now.
