So do you think the mac book pro is a good investment? I’m, thinking about getting one, some of your expertise would be helpful. From what i’ve read online it sounds great. so long from minneapolis, eric.
Well, I bought one. If you need a laptop today, then yes, I’d get the MacBook Pro. But if you can wait a few months, I’d wait for the rest of the portable line to be released (other MacBook Pro sizes, models, and the new iBook/MacBook). The other argument for waiting is that you should never buy version 1.0 of anything. I usually agree with that but I was caught up in the Steve Jobs Reality Distortion Field last week and was also able to get my hands on a MacBook Pro. They’re just soooo fast. I’m anxiously awaiting my shipment notice from Apple.
Any idea where I can get more information on the different MacBookPro models, I couldn’t find them on the website. Yes I am willing to wait so this may be an option.
There’s not a whole lot of difference between the two models:
CPU: either a 1.67GHz or 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo
RAM: 512MB on the 1.67 and 1GB on the 1.83 – expandable to 2GB
Storage: 80GB 5400RPM SATA drive on the 1.67 and 100GB 5400RPM SATA drive on the 1.83 – both expandable to 120GB 5400RPM SATA or 100GB 7200RPM SATA drives
Video: ATI X1600 w/128MB VRAM on the 1.67 and 256MB VRAM on the 1.83
Since it hasn’t been released yet, nobody has real-world specs on it or much more detail than was available at MacWorld. Any specs you may find online are, at this time, very suspect since the floor models at MacWorld were preproduction models and not yet finished.
Apple only announced the MacBook Pro in a 15.4″ display model. Since there are currently 3 sizes of PowerBook (12, 15, 17 (which I currently own)), conventional wisdom says Apple will release the MBP in more sizes. Time will tell.
